My Therapeutic Approach

My Therapeutic Approach

There is no single therapeutic approach that works for everyone.

Since “talk therapy” isn't always enough, my approach is a holistic one that integrates both traditional and nontraditional psychotherapy. My work embraces the whole person - body, mind and spirit.

Depending on your unique needs, I may use or draw from: EMDR Therapy,  contemporary marriage and couples counseling, body centered therapies such as Hakomi therapy and transpersonal psychology. My work is strongly influenced by humanistic psychology, contemplative psychotherapy and the practices of several spiritual traditions. In addition, I incorporate aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy, life coaching, guided imagery and visualization, relaxation techniques, journaling and mindfulness practice.

My sessions are highly interactive. I believe that you deserve to work with a therapist who is more than a spectator participating at a distance. I also believe that a therapist needs to be genuinely present and willing to actively participate. While I recognize that we must all ultimately rely on - and trust - ourselves, I believe that it is enormously helpful to work with someone who is honest and direct, as well as compassionate and empathetic. My intention is to be as respectful, supportive and useful to my clients as I can be. Rather than simply listening passively and maintaining an artificial clinical distance, I am willing to share specific suggestions and opinions whenever appropriate.

Because therapy is most powerful when individuals actively apply what they are trying to master or learn, my clients and I frequently develop homework assignments or tasks to be practiced and accomplished in the real world. In this way, one has the opportunity to begin employing new tools and integrating resources which are in the process of development. When we begin demonstrating results, we feel more vital and alive.

I usually request that new clients do a little preparatory work prior to, or after our first therapy session. Essentially, I ask individuals or couples to reflect on a few specific questions that I have formulated in service of “jump starting” the therapeutic process. While this isn’t mandatory, I recommend it for several reasons. First, it provides me with critical data, while eliminating the need to meet over and over to get background information. Once completed, I read and study this material at no charge to my clients. It also provides clients the time for the introspection necessary to formulate many of the goals and intentions that will be the focus of our therapy sessions. Finally, it helps with the formulation of a genuine inner vision of where one wants to go. Over the years, clients have consistently reported that this preparation was an invaluable part of their therapy.
