EMDR
The EMDR International Association definition of
EMDR is as follows:
“Eye Movement Desensitization
and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a method of
psychotherapy that has been extensively researched
and proven effective for the treatment of trauma.”
As a practicing psychotherapist since 1990, I am
convinced that EMDR is the most effective form of therapy for
helping people resolve traumatic experiences.
While the concept
of trauma is typically associated with
experiences such as sexual abuse, war, natural
disasters, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD), it also can be applied to other negative
events that one hasn’t been able to work through
and fully resolve.
As a trauma specialist I have
used EMDR to rapidly resolve experiences
such as:
|
● |
sexual abuse, including date rape
|
|
● |
physical or
emotional abuse |
|
● |
panic attacks |
|
● |
a divorce or
relationship breakup |
|
● |
a lost
pregnancy or abortion |
|
● |
war trauma |
|
● |
death of a
significant person or pet |
|
● |
a motor
vehicle accident |
|
● |
bullying |
|
● |
any other
disturbing event |
As a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing
in trauma resolution in Denver & Boulder CO, I confidently rely on EMDR for the
following reasons:
-
As a Holistic
Psychotherapist, I believe that EMDR helps one
access and activate one’s intrinsic healing
process. Many have referred to this natural
healing ability as the “inner healer." I believe
that EMDR allows one to rapidly resolve trauma
that is believed to reside in one’s body –
whether we consider that to be in one’s nervous
system, one’s chakras, one’s energy field, etc.
I find that when we are able integrate and
resolve painful experiences, we essentially
neutralize and release them. And even though we
still remember them, they cease to be
disturbing.
- EMDR is
a time-efficient treatment option. Once the necessary History/Treatment
Planning/Preparation have been completed, most
of my clients can evaluate EMDR’s effectiveness
almost immediately. While the length of
treatment for trauma will vary depending on the
nature and severity of the problem, many clients achieve significant
or full resolution of a particular trauma during
their very first EMDR session.
- The
therapeutic effectiveness of EMDR therapy is
well documented, and has been verified by
numerous clinical research studies.
